A study done by a team underscores the important role that omega-3 fats play in colon cancer prevention. The researchers focused their attention on a group of fishermen with exceptionally low rates of colon cancer. After spending some time surveying this group, they discovered that many of the fishermen had rather unhealthy habits: they smoked, ate high salt foods, and had a relatively low fiber diet. However, there was one healthy behavior that they all shared: they ate a lot of fish. This fact, concluded the researchers, offers a likely explanation for why they were protected from colon cancer. I report this not to encourage anyone to smoke or eat high-salt, low-fiber foods. It is simply an illustration of how omega-3s, yet again, can be especially powerful medicine.
