Depression is not just a passing case of the blues. It is characterized by a deep sense of sadness and hopelessness that lasts months to years with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. A diagnosis of major depression requires that symptoms are significant enough to interfere with a person’s relationships and daily activities. There are a whole range of factors that can trigger a depression: some, like the death of a loved one, are external triggers, while others are more internal, caused primarily by an imbalance in brain chemistry. Similarly there are many possible treatments for depression, including medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.
